CataloniaBio & HealthTech connects companies with Sant Joan de Déu Hospital to meet paediatric clinical needs

comunicacio@cataloniabioht.org,

Professionals from the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona shared the clinical needs they have identified in their daily work in paediatric care with around sixty attendees from around thirty companies and start-ups from CataloniaBio & HealthTech and the sector. It was held on the afternoon of Tuesday 9 April at the Auditori Plaza de l'Hospital Sant Joan de Déu. It is an initiative of CataloniaBio & HealthTech, through the Internal Innovation Committee, on this occasion with the collaboration of the Sant Joan de Déu Innovation team and the innovation hub they coordinate, i4KIDS.

Starting with a visit to some of the Hospital's unique facilities, which served to provide some real examples of the centre's innovation model. The friendly design of the hospital's entrance area, for example, or a visit to the Còrtex, the logistics control area that responds to the needs of telematic care, control of resources and flows, and monitoring of areas and patients. The digital evolution project of the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, a space based on the intelligent management of the information generated in the hospital by patients, their families, and their environment.

The main part of the event took place in the Auditori Plaza, where the professionals presented the challenges they had identified. They presented a selection of six of the more than 20 that had arrived at the centre's innovation unit in the call to prepare the event. The attendees, who were able to consult the challenges beforehand on the event'swebsite, listened attentively to the presentations and were able to ask the professionals all the questions about each case. The needs identified were as diverse as systems for verifying risk medication, monitoring solutions for patients with heart disease, early detection of body dissatisfaction, ways to facilitate the diagnosis of rare diseases. And some needs that require special attention in paediatric patient care, such as non-invasive blood pressure monitoring solutions or objective pain monitoring.

Arnau Valls, head of the Innovation unit, applauded and welcomed the opportunity to hold a conference like this one promoted by CataloniaBio & HealthTech, stressing the importance of fostering public-private collaboration and the benefits it has for both parties. In his turn, Joan Comella, Director of Research and Innovation of the Hospital, emphasised the differential fact that Sant Joan de Déu is a hospital focused on children, who "represent 25% of the current population, but will be 100% of the future" and who also deserve the attention of these collaborations.

The day ended with a networking session where it was possible to discuss the various challenges presented and establish connections for future collaborations, which will help to solve clinical needs in paediatrics.
